From time to time, I get buttonholed by Roger.
It happened a day or two ago and I wrote a haiku about it:
‘Hi,’ Roger said, ‘Look,
batik, fifteen quid’: cheap for
the soul of Bali
Thinking about it, I realised that Roger does not use the word quid, possibly using ‘pounds’, but usually numbers: ‘fifteen’; second, I don’t think he greets with ‘Hi’ either - ’hello’ seems more likely - I’ll have to pay attention next time. Anyhow, last time I was buttonholed, the result was the purchase of number 13 in this art-objects series - a beautiful Papua-new Guinea painted cloth. That was several months ago, so when it happened again on Saturday, I had a moment of excitement. There was a confused dialogue with Tasha, his assistant, while I wondered whether the precious object - which I couldn’t see, and the ferreting Roger couldn’t either - had been sold. Then he pounced, pulled out the above and - I was smitten again. Where is it from? I asked, and he told me.
It’s late, so I’ll continue this later - there’s more. Meanwhile - enjoy!
